There are many reasons why people have phobias and research shows that most phobias are learnt at an early stage in our life. We learn from other people, our experiences and our environment to be wary of certain situations or objects.
However, there are times when we can learn these things incorrectly and this can have a dramatic effect, turning an understandable fear into a terrifying phobia.
Phobias are often learnt from an authority figure such as a teacher or a parent or through a traumatic event. If you have a spider phobia, your mother possibly taught you this!
Often when you experience a trigger object or situation e.g. the spider, the unconscious part of your mind takes over and any rational thoughts are bypassed as the survival instinct kicks in.
The main benefit of using hypnotherapy to help you overcome your phobia, is that it allows the therapist to communicate with the unconscious part of your mind.

Hypnotherapy is a natural and safe way to help you to change in any way you wish. Hypnosis can be used as a tool in therapy to treat a wide variety of health and personal problems.
Hypnotherapy is not the same as stage hypnosis. You will not be "made" to do anything against your will. The therapist will use relaxation techniques and you will gradually slip into a very pleasant hypnotic state.

You will be gently guided into a relaxed state of mind that feels like daydreaming. In this relaxed state the therapist will speak in a calm voice about your problem. You can bring yourself back to full awareness at any time. Most people find hypnosis an enjoyable experience.

We are often asked if it is possible to help children with hypnotherapy, and yes, children respond well to hypnosis.
Hypnotherapy can be used to help children overcome problems such as anxiety, pain, bed-wetting, fears and phobias.
Hypnotherapy can be effective in helping a child to relax and they can learn how to use their imagination to take themselves to a "special place". This is particularly helpful for children who have fears around going to the dentist and hospital because they can relax their body and use their imagination to take themselves to their "special place", during any treatment.
Children who are over 5 years old respond best to treatment and it is important that the child has some motivation to change.
Children make good candidates for hypnotherapy because they have wonderful imaginations. They slip in and out of hypnosis very naturally and easily. Children have an advantage over adults in that they tend to become completely absorbed in what they are doing, therefore they respond well to imagery and story telling. In order for a child to reach the hypnotic state the therapist may tell them a story about e.g. taking a ride on a magic carpet. It is also quite common during hypnosis that the therapist will use characters from the child's life e.g. action heroes or favourite toys to help the child achieve the desired results.
